Supporting the Fight Against Hunger

…So that food banks and school breakfast programs around the world are able to provide for those who rely on them.

…So that fewer people skip breakfast because their cupboards are empty.

These are just a few of many reasons Kellogg Co. employees united for a global service project on World Food Day to collect nearly 130,000 pounds of food – 30,000 more than last year - from events held in 30 countries.

Through its Breakfasts for Better Days program, Kellogg and Kellogg Company Fund have pledged to donate 1 billion servings of cereal and snacks, more than half of which are breakfast, by the end of 2016. The results from World Food Day contribute to this goal. With our partners from Feeding America, the importance of breakfast and hunger relief was the topic of this recent Twitter Chat.

World Food Day, held annually on Oct. 16, was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to take action against hunger. Every year, advocates around the world participate in a variety of events and activities to be part of the solution.

“Our World Food Day activities wouldn’t be possible without the participation of our dedicated, caring employees around the world,” says Kris Charles, Vice President, Global Communications and Philanthropy.

“We are making a difference to help children and families experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Together, our work will ensure that more people around the world can enjoy the power of breakfast.”

Below are just a few examples of the results from around the globe:

-        U.S.: Food drives in 35 Kellogg locations benefitted 27 food banks, and many Kellogg groups volunteered with Feeding America food banks or affiliates as part of our United Way Days of Caring efforts.

-        Latin America: Hundreds of employees volunteered in 11 countries, and we supported school breakfast programs and food banks in impoverished cities and towns throughout the region.

-        Canada: We donated more than 8,000 servings of breakfast to the Breakfast Club of Canada, in addition to 750 cases of cereal provided to Food Banks Canada.

-        Asia-Pacific: In New Zealand, employees worked with the Salvation Army to serve food and donated 64,000 servings of cereal packed by volunteers in nine centers in Auckland. More than 15,000 pounds of cereal and snacks will be donated to Second Harvest Japan. And we donated more than 52,000 servings of breakfast for hungry kids and families, in partnership with the Next Generation Healthy & Growth Foundation in China.

-        Europe: Employees from 15 locations supported food drives, volunteered at food banks and local school breakfast clubs, along with other hunger-related community projects. We donated more than 4,000 pounds of food to 20 charitable organizations.

We know there is more we can also do outside our Kellogg family to help end discrimination and intolerance.

That’s why Kellogg Company and our Kellogg Company Fund are committing an additional $1 million to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to support the important work they are doing for racial justice.
