It’s been said, if you want something done, ask a busy person.
If that’s true, Terresa and Doug, who both work at Kellogg Company, are certainly your go-to couple.
“We have six biological children, one who’s already left home, four who are still in college and one high school student,” says Terresa. “We also have five grandchildren.
"Last year, we added three foster children that we are now in the process of adopting. And we recently welcomed a five-year-old foster daughter into our family, as well.”
For this couple, communication, sharing responsibilities and leveraging existing programs and policies at Kellogg is key. It’s because of programs and a commitment to working parents that Working Mother magazine has again named Kellogg to its list of "100 Best Companies" in 2014.
TECHNOLOGY
Doug and Terresa use every available technological tool to maintain good work-life balance.
"With wireless Internet, my laptop, and the privilege of incorporating flexible work schedules into our positions here at Kellogg, we are able to fulfill our responsibilities as employees and as parents," says Terresa.
Terresa, who telecommutes a few days a week, has also learned several organizational skills to help her prioritize her workload.
"My manager has been very supportive of flex time, as well as the work-from-home initiative, so that’s also been enormously helpful," she says.
SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES
At home, Terresa and Doug make every effort to divide and conquer.
"My husband gets the kids off to school, and I use flex time to come in to work early, so I can be there when they get home in the afternoon," says Terresa.
"This way, we can look after our foster children without additional care providers."
"I give credit to both of our managers for encouraging us to explore flexible work options," says Doug. "It’s made a huge difference for us, and for these four young girls who needed a safe place to live and parents to love them."
For this couple, as well as many other Kellogg employees, flexible work arrangements are a win-win.
"As the company continues to promote flex time and working from home, we’ll have more emotionally healthy, productive people working here," says Doug.
