According to the IDC report, IBM is seen as strong in developing strategies to create next-generation tools and methodology, marketing and branding of business analytics services, and producing strategies to increase organic and inorganic growth. As a leader, IBM is categorized as having "a perfect combination of capabilities to continue to be successful in today's ecosystem and as having the right set of strategic initiatives to maintain and grow their future position in the ecosystem."

IBM received the highest scores in the report, which states that IBM excels in the areas of building, pricing, positioning and delivering capabilities and has a strong set of differentiating capabilities that drive success in the current ecosystem. IBM is also a leader in implementing agile and differentiated strategies that align with customer requirements both today and in three to five years, the report states.

For example, ITAU, one of the largest banks in Latin America, recently awarded IBM a three-year agreement for consulting and systems integration services. Using analytics, IBM will help ITAU gain greater insight into customers' needs as well as business risks and strategic operations. By relying on industry-leading techniques and methodologies developed in worldwide client engagements, IBM expects that the agreement will enhance analytics skills in Brazil.

According to the report, "IBM is an IDC MarketScape Leader worldwide. IBM's BAO practice is built on core capabilities in BAO strategy, BI and performance management, advanced analytics and optimization, enterprise information management, and enterprise content management."

The report continues, "IBM also has delivery capabilities in all eight of its global delivery centers and extends its expertise through a BAO center of competence that brings IBM's deepest subject matter experts to clients anywhere in the world. Last year's debut of Watson, the computing system that uses natural language processing and algorithms to beat Jeopardy! Grand Champions, was a first in the industry. IBM brings clients, its researchers, and GBS consultants together in eight analytics solutions centers around the world to explore the possibilities of analytics."

"Without trusted data, there is no ability to extract insight, or put that insight into action," said Fred Balboni, global leader, Business Analytics and Optimization, IBM Global Business Services. "IBM's leadership in business analytics is the foundation of our ability to address the agenda of global business leaders -- CMOs, CFOs, CEOs, heads of strategy or risk management -- whose priorities and opportunities are all being transformed by the ability to handle massive volumes of data."

IBM's BAO consulting services was founded in 2009 as part of IBM Global Business Services. Within three years, the practice grew from 4,000 to more than 9,000 consultants that specialize in business analytics and information management solutions. IBM currently has analytics solutions centers across the world and has announced it will invest more than $100 million on Big Data research.
