PHOENIX (Jan. 14, 2020) – Banner Estrella Medical Center is celebrating 15 years as a full-service, top performing hospital in west Phoenix. Banner Estrella opened with fanfare in 2005 as one of the first fully digital hospitals in the country, serving as a model for electronic medical records implementation.

Since opening, Banner Estrella has grown from its original 214 patient rooms to 317 all-private rooms to meet the growing health care needs of families in the West Valley. The added rooms and space came from the addition of a new six-floor patient tower that partially opened in 2014. Unused space is available to respond to future growth.

"We're so honored that the community has trusted us, and allowed us to provide care over the past 15 years," said Banner Estrella CEO Courtney Ophaug. "It has been our privilege to serve more than 1.5 million patients and family members from our community over these years."

In 2005, a total of 1,346 babies were delivered at Banner Estrella, compared to 5,059 babies delivered in 2019. That growth is seen throughout the hospital, including:

  • 8,944 admissions (including newborns) in 2005, compared to 22,798 in 2019
  • 2,331 surgeries in 2005, compared to 8,552 in 2019
  • 44,300 emergency room visits in 2005, compared to 96,362 in 2019

The hospital offers an array of medical services, including heart care, emergency services, general surgery, weight loss surgery, medical imaging, orthopedic surgery and a comprehensive and very busy maternity services program.

Banner Estrella is designated a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to care for premature babies and ventilator-dependent newborns.
