Our Stories

At American Water, safety is not just a priority – it’s simply how we choose to live and work. So, throughout June, we recognize National Safety Month by inviting you to join us in committing to these safe practices at work, home, and in your community.
Fire hydrant safety
Fire hydrants are a crucial part of our communities’ safety infrastructure. While water utilities are responsible for maintaining fire hydrants through activities like hydrant flushing, we all play a role in helping to ensure hydrants are available in the event of an emergency.
Follow these fire hydrant safety reminders:
- Only fire department personnel and authorized maintenance workers should operate fire hydrants. Unauthorized use can damage hydrants, lower water pressure, and risk water quality.
- Do not block or obstruct the streets and pathways to fire hydrants.
- If you see an open or damaged hydrant, report it immediately to the local authorities.
Staying safe on the road
Driver and vehicle safety is a cornerstone of American Water’s safety priorities. Our employees undergo continuous mandatory training focused on safe driving and reducing vehicle incidents. Whether you’re driving for five minutes or five hours, staying safe on the road means adhering to all traffic laws and safety regulations, including:
- Wearing a seatbelt
- Following the speed limit
- Avoiding distractions that could reduce focus, like cell phone use
- Using extra caution and reducing speed in work zones
- Giving extra following distance especially near cones, trucks, and equipment
- Exercising situational awareness
Summer safety
Rising temperatures and longer days mean more opportunities to be outside. Enjoy the outdoors by taking the proper precautions.
- Drink water before you get thirsty since thirst is often the first sign of dehydration.
- The sun zaps your skin of hydration. Wear sunscreen to keep your skin protected and hydrated longer.
- Don’t trespass or swim in a public water supply reservoir and confirm a local body of water is not located on private property before taking a dip.
National Safety Month also reminds us to protect our local natural resources. Spring rains and increased summer recreation can carry more debris into waterways. Dispose of your trash in designated areas to protect source waters.
As seasons change, now is also a good time for American Water customers to verify and update emergency contact preferences in their MyWater account to receive water and wastewater-related notifications quickly.
