Wounded Veterans Go Back in Time with Wounded Warrior Project

SHAKOPEE, Minn., Dec. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Veterans were transported to a time of lords, ladies, and mystical creatures during a recent Wounded Warrior Project^® (WWP) outing to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival in Shakopee. As participants enjoyed exploring one of America's largest Renaissance fairs, they got a chance to connect with warriors in their community and immerse themselves in the medieval era.

"It's important for veterans and their family members to gather at program events like this because it creates a comfortable environment for getting to know each other," said Navy veteran Jaimie Bahl. "These gatherings are a wonderful way to get out of the house and experience something new. I was excited about going because I have always wanted to attend a Renaissance festival."

Merchants and entertainers – all clothed in unique period costumes – crafted artisan goods like candles and jewelry, or danced and performed magic acts on stages throughout the grounds. Warriors then gathered for a feast while they enjoyed a staple of Renaissance fairs everywhere – live armored jousting.

Warrior outreach activities support the long-term needs of wounded veterans by reintroducing them to the unique bonds experienced during military service – in settings that accommodate physical injuries and social anxieties. By connecting warriors with their communities and fellow veterans, the potential for isolation is diminished, allowing for a simpler path to recovery.

"Attending events with Wounded Warrior Project makes it easier to make friends – friends who you see again at future outings. I was able to meet a fellow female veteran at the fair and even give her information about local female veteran resources. Hopefully we can connect again down the road and be there for each other."

WWP programs are personalized to encourage warriors, caregivers, and family members to reach goals relating to mental health, physical health and wellness, career and benefits counseling, and connecting with other warriors and their communities.
