BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Jan. 15, 2010 – Starting tomorrow, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly are kicking off special safety awareness events and demonstrations at each resort to help raise ski and snowboard safety awareness on the mountains. Activities at each resort are designed to be fun and interactive and also help skiers and riders of all levels learn more about safety on the slopes.

Activities and events begin on Jan. 16 and run through Jan. 22 and vary by resort. Highlights include:
  • Ski Patrol Open House (Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone)
  • Avalanche Dog Demonstrations/Meet and Greet (Breckenridge, Keystone and Beaver Creek)
  • 20 percent off select helmets at Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Heavenly Sports stores
  • Safety Scavenger Hunt (Vail and Heavenly)
  • Terrain Park Safety (Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge)
  • Avalanche Safety Awareness (Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge)
“Vail Resorts places the highest value on the safety of its guests and its employees and we work hard to promote safety everyday,” said John Garnsey, co-president of Vail Resorts’ Mountain Division and chief operating officer of Beaver Creek Resort. “National Safety Awareness Week gives us a great opportunity to highlight safety awareness and practices at our resorts and to promote safer ski and ride practices among all of our guests and employees.”

Vail Resorts has taken its commitment to safety to the next level this ski season by requiring all employees to wear helmets when skiing or riding on the job at each of its five mountain resorts. Helmets have been provided to every employee as part of their standard uniform for working on the mountain and the new initiative is part of Vail Resorts’ overall commitment to skier and snowboarder safety programs. Additionally, all children aged 12 and under participating in group ski or snowboard lessons are now required to wear a helmet. Vail Resorts strongly recommends the use of helmets for all guests, regardless of age or ability level.

“Our employees are now setting the example for all who enjoy skiing and riding our slopes,” said Garnsey.
