ENID, Okla. – Nextera Energy Resources Oklahoma solar technician Chet Dysart received company-wide recognition in a surprise ceremony in August for helping a family to safety after their truck rolled over. It happened while Chet was commuting between company sites in Norman and Bray.

Chet saw the truck approaching from behind at a high speed, then saw it swerve into a ditch before rolling onto the passenger side. Without hesitation, Chet stopped at a safe distance, activated his hazard lights and approached the overturned vehicle.

"I could hear screaming of multiple different voices," Chet recalled. "When I got to the vehicle, I tried to calm the situation."

Inside, he found a father and three children under 10 years old. All were conscious, and the children remained safely secured in their seatbelts. Chet carefully extracted each child through the vehicle's opening, laying down a tarp to protect them from broken glass before moving them to safety 10 feet away.

The father, who was able to exit on his own, sustained minor injuries. Chet retrieved his first-aid kit and water bottles for the children from his truck. He also coordinated with two passersby who stopped to assist. They called 911 and helped the father with first aid. Chet remained on scene to brief emergency responders before they took over care.

"All the training we do was pretty beneficial and became second nature," said Chet, who has worked for NextEra Energy since 2016, starting as a technician before transitioning to operations in March. "As the situation changed – getting the kids out, providing protective cover from the glass, having the first aid kit ready – these were all things we have continuously focused on and trained for."

Chet, a father of two including a 12-year-old stepson and a 10-month-old daughter, said the incident reinforced the importance of NextEra Energy's safety training beyond the workplace.

"I was looking out for my neighbors,” he said. “This incident made me hug my kids a little bit harder, and if it had been my kids, I would want someone to check on me.”
