Leclanché significantly strengthens its product range and system integration capabilities with the acquisition of the company Trineuron

Leclanché continues to increase its system expertise and its vertical integration of storage technology from cell manufacturing to complete system design and manufacturing. This acquisition will allow Leclanché to increase its offering in terms of Battery Management Systems (BMS) and module design for demanding transport applications. The acquisition of Trineuron also brings a team of 10 experienced engineers and an existing sales backlog and pipeline. Leclanché continues to position itself as one of the few companies manufacturing and offering multiple chemistries and multiple system designs.

Yverdon-les-Bains, 20 July 2015 – Trineuron, a business unit of Emrol, is active in the design and manufacturing of lithium ion storage systems mainly for transport applications and with a strong focus on the use of lithium Titanate technology. With this acquisition, Leclanché adds a new system development centre, incorporating an additional 10 engineers from Trineuron. The development capability of Leclanché will be greatly increased with the addition of these competences, and in particular in the field of transport applications such as electric/hybrid buses, ferries, mining vehicles, AGVs (automated guided vehicles), etc.  Trineuron has a large number of existing customers in transport applications, in particular for AGVs and has a significant sales pipeline.  The commercial activities will be integrated within our Transport Business Unit, while engineering will be integrated within our System Development Team. As part of the acquisition process, Stefan Louis, Managing Director of Trineuron, will be joining the executive committee of Leclanché in the role of Chief Strategy Officer. The acquisition is in the form of a share deal whereby the company acquires a subsidiary of Emrol against payment of 410,000 Leclanché shares.

This acquisition will allow for a product cost reduction and an increase in Leclanché’s competitiveness, along with a stronger market position by increasing the product offerings and expanding its storage system design expertise. Leclanché will continue to build its industry leadership in quality and performance and further position itself as the complete energy storage solution provider.

Anil Srivastava, CEO of Leclanché, commented: ”We are very happy to be able to announce this important advancement in our company’s continued growth, which is fully in line with our previously communicated strategy. Trineuron has a very complementary technology to Leclanche’s current business and brings a strong sales footprint in our target markets. They will provide a strong re-enforcement of our storage system offerings and advance the vertical integration of our storage solution technology. By adding the development capability for transport solutions from Trineuron, Leclanché increases its depth as an integrated storage solution provider for industrial applications.”

About Leclanché

Established in 1909 Leclanché has been a reliable partner for battery storage technologies. Founded in the tradition of Georges Leclanché, the inventor of the dry cell battery, Leclanché today has a rich portfolio of Energy Storage Systems that include Specialized Customer-specific Battery Systems to industry leading lithium-ion solutions.

Through the integration of a spin-off of the German Fraunhofer Institute in 2006 the company evolved from a traditional battery producer into one of the first developers and manufacturers of lithium-ion cells in Europe.

Leclanché’s Storage Solutions are optimized for various applications, in particular for the integration of renewable energy, diesel fuel reduction, electricity grid-connected ancillary services, peak power shaving for heavy industries but also for heavy duty transportation in buses, trams, trains or maritime vessels.

Leclanché products are characterized by a very high cycle stability (both for cells with titanate and graphite anode) and long service life. Thanks to our patented separator technology, which is a core element of lithium ion batteries, Leclanché is able to make cells with very good safety characteristics in a highly automated production process. Leclanché operates a fully automated plant for the production of large format lithium-ion cells at an annual maximum capacity of up to one million cells and is capable of running multiple chemistries through production for different cell characteristics.

In addition, Leclanché offers a number of specialized battery systems through its Portable Business Unit, such as customer-specific energy storage systems for defence and medical applications. Leclanché also distributes primary and secondary batteries and accessories of other producers.

Leclanché, which is listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SIX:LECN), has a wide range of storage products for homes, small offices, large industries, electricity grids, hybridization for mass transport systems like fleet of buses, trams etc.
