CVS/pharmacy , America's largest pharmacy, and The American Diabetes Association announced today that they have launched a groundbreaking new program, Taking ExtraCare of Your Diabetes, in all 4,100+ CVS pharmacy stores.

Taking ExtraCare of Your Diabetes is a free program designed to help people with diabetes live healthier lives. People who choose to participate in the program will receive a Self-Care Guide, quarterly magazine, and program rewards (free gift and money-saving offers) for purchasing diabetes-care products at CVS.

As part of its mission to provide education that will improve the lives of all people with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association will provide the diabetes self-care information for the program and will be exploring the possibilities of providing additional information and services to customers in the future.

Enrolling in the CVS Taking ExtraCare of Your Diabetes program is easy. Customers can complete an enrollment form at any CVS/pharmacy location. Membership in Taking ExtraCare of Your Diabetes is free of charge.

"The Taking ExtraCare of Your Diabetes program is an innovative and convenient way to educate and provide value to our customers who are living with diabetes," said Helena Foulkes, Vice President of Marketing at CVS/pharmacy. "We look forward to working with the American Diabetes Association on this important health issue."

"The American Diabetes Association is excited to be collaborating with CVS/pharmacy on this initiative. This project will help us to extend our reach to more people with diabetes and their caregivers who need much support and resources to manage this serious disease," said Steve Smith, Chair of the Board for the American Diabetes Association. "We applaud CVS/pharmacy for working jointly with our Association to spearhead this program and for being a valuable member of the diabetes community."

Diabetes is a serious illness characterized by high blood sugar levels that result from the body's inability to produce or respond properly to insulin. In the United States, approximately 16 million Americans have diabetes. More than one-third of them -- nearly six million -- don't even know they have it. Diabetes can lead to severely debilitating or fatal complications, such as blindness, amputations, kidney disease, heart disease, and stroke. It is the sixth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States.

CVS is America's #1 pharmacy, dispensing more retail prescriptions in more states than any other pharmacy in the U.S. CVS has created innovative approaches to serve the healthcare needs of all its customers through more than 4,100 CVS/pharmacy stores; CVS ProCare, its specialty pharmacy business; CVS.com, its online pharmacy; and PharmaCare, its pharmacy benefit management company.
