BNY Mellon Earns Gold LEED Certification for Its New Office in Wroclaw

Company is the first to be awarded LEED certification for commercial interiors in Wroclaw and one of the first in Poland

Jul 8, 2014

WROCLAW, 8 July 2014 - BNY Mellon, a global leader in investment management and investment services, has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification for Commercial Interiors (LEED CI) for its new Global Delivery Centre (GDC) in Wroclaw, Poland. LEED is a cornerstone in building standards and environmental concerns and gold certification second highest certification a company can be awarded. LEED CI designs promote interaction and collaboration, responsible use of materials and energy, and indoor environmental quality.

BNY Mellon is committed to sustainable business practices globally, with a focus on enterprise-wide carbon tracking, long-term capital planning, building operation and maintenance best practices, green design principles and promoting sustainable work habits. In November 2013, the company relocated its Wroclaw GDC to a brand new office building - Aquarius Business House - and capitalised on the move to invest in exceptional environmental and sustainability initiatives. Highlights include:

  • Innovative Lighting – the company has a fully LED building and uses light harvesting to manage energy use. These lights use at least 75% less energy than incandescent lighting.
  • State-of-the-art technology – BNY Mellon employees are using the very latest NEC monitors which shut down when no one is sat there and save energy.
  • Re-usable materials - The carpets used throughout the office are 82% recycled and a large percentage of the materials used in BNY Mellon’s office furniture is also recycled.
  • Re-cycling - Fully bin-less office with centralised recycling hubs for all employees to use for various waste streams.
  • Water management – One of BNY Mellon’s sustainability promises is that the company will continuously monitor, measure and seek to reduce its water consumption through improved water efficiency at properties under company control. In Wroclaw, BNY Mellon’s water systems were designed to meet LEED’s requirement to reduce the amount of ‘business as usual’ water usage by 30% per year.

“Our commitment to environmental sustainability encompasses everything we do – from how we build and manage our facilities, to how we use energy, water and paper,” said Martin Ring, managing director of BNY Mellon’s Wroclaw GDC. “We also strive to create a healthy working environment for our employees so that they enjoy coming to work, and feel they have a workspace which fuels creative thinking and positive collaboration. LEED is good for business, good for the environment, and it’s good for our people too.”

Colliers International, a leading adviser in the commercial real estate market, advised BNY Mellon on ways to optimise energy and water efficiency, as well as indoor environment quality. Colliers also supported BNY Mellon in the selection of construction management strategies and sustainable building materials and site cleaning procedures to ensure superior environmental quality of the space for future occupants. The advisory on certification of the office space for BNY Mellon was prepared in conjunction with Aukett+Heese Frankfurt.
