More than 2,400 hours of volunteering and more than €40,000 raised by employees for Irish charities; a total of €180,000 given to Irish charities in 12 months

CORK, 6 March 2014 – BNY Mellon, a global leader in investment management and investment services, has kick-started its 2014 Community Partnership Programme with a donation of €14,500 to local charity, Cork Penny Dinners.

This pledge follows a record year of community partnership for BNY Mellon in Ireland. In 2013 employees contributed to sending over €180,000 to Irish charities and helping more worthy causes than ever before including Cork Penny Dinners, The Shine Centre for Autism, Junior Achievement Ireland, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and The Simon Community. Employees raised a record €40,000 over the course of 2013, which BNY Mellon matched euro for euro. BNY Mellon also made corporate donations to various Irish charities amounting to €100,000.

Along with financial assistance, employees donated 2,400 hours of their time to support charities in their communities through a broad range of tasks including painting and decorating, gardening and labouring, to serving hot meals and providing job interview training.

“The World Giving Index 2013*, published in December, ranked Ireland as the most generous country in Europe and the fifth most generous country in the world,” said Joe Duffy, Country Executive for Ireland, BNY Mellon. “This comes as no surprise to me given the passion and enthusiasm I see by our people to get involved and offer support through both financial and physical assistance. It highlights just how deep-seated the idea of charity and charitable giving is in our company and our society in general.”

“Caring about our communities is a cornerstone of BNY Mellon's philanthropic philosophy and we invest in initiatives that make our communities better places to live and work. I’d like to thank everyone from our offices in Cork, Wexford and Dublin who gave time and money in helping so many worthy causes and allowing us to achieve our most successful year ever,” said Duffy.

Since establishing a presence in Ireland in 1994, BNY Mellon has grown to over 1,800 people across Ireland in Cork, Wexford and Dublin and is committed to making a real difference in the community through direct donations, team-oriented volunteering, employee fundraising and individual volunteering. Employees are allowed two days of paid volunteer time with many gaining an extra third day during the company’s annual Community Partnership Campaign each autumn.

Speaking about the support of BNY Mellon and the company’s latest donation of €14,500, long-time Cork Penny Dinners volunteer Caitriona Twomey said: “This extremely generous donation from BNY Mellon will be hugely beneficial in allowing us to serve hot and nutritious meals to our patrons throughout the winter months. We are entirely funded by voluntary contributions and without the financial and volunteer support from local businesses such as BNY Mellon and its employees; we would not be able to provide the over 1,000 meals prepared and served by our volunteers each week.”
