2010 Financial News Awards for Excellence in Institutional Asset Management Europe

LONDON and NEW YORK, October 22, 2010 — Helena Morrissey, chief executive officer of Newton*, part of BNY Mellon Asset Management, has been named the 'Most Influential Woman in Asset Management' at the Financial News Awards for Excellence in Institutional Asset Management Europe 2010.

The Financial News Excellence Awards aim to chart the progress and recognise the achievements of the top players operating within the asset management industry in Europe. Financial News' team of specialist asset management journalists considered several hundred companies and individuals, and referred to information including investment performance, mandate wins, significant hires, profitability, innovations or other matters, and compiled a shortlist of up to five nominations for each category. The shortlists were sent to 80 judges, comprising pension scheme officers, investment consultants, asset managers, fund of funds managers and other advisers to the asset management industry.  From a grouping of strong candidates, the panel of 80 voted that Morrissey was to be the recipient of this distinguished award.

Mitchell Harris, interim head of BNY Mellon Asset Management, comments: "As chief executive officer of Newton, Helena has helped her team realise growth in Newton Investment Management's business despite varied market conditions. To the end of June of this year, Newton's global assets under management grew by 25% over one year and ex-UK assets under management doubled over the previous three, with 4.5bn pounds Sterling of the total growth attributed to new institutional wins."

Morrissey has extensive experience in asset management, both as chief executive officer at Newton and through her previous role as a fixed income manager. In addition to her wholehearted engagement with the asset management industry, she is committed through a number of initiatives to championing the role of women in business.

As well as her role at Newton, Morrissey is a Director of the UK Investment Management Association. She is the only female board director and, indeed, the only female director there has ever been at the IMA.  In addition she has served on the FSA Practitioner Panel for the last four years, representing the asset management industry. In 2010 she has chaired the panel's survey group, the biennial survey conducted of the financial services industry which will influence the outcome of proposed regulatory reforms. She is also a member of the Royal Academy's corporate board.

Morrissey has expressed her views constructively on a range of industry topics, for example, as a member of the HM Treasury Asset Management Working Group and in her response to the Personal Accounts Delivery Authority's consultation paper last year.
