BNY Mellon's Pershing Unit Launches Initiative to Educate Introducing Broker-Dealer and Independent Registered Investment Advisor Customers on Driving Growth with International Investment Solutions

Jun 4, 2010

JERSEY CITY, N.J., June 4, 2010 — Pershing LLC, a BNY Mellon company, has launched an educational initiative on international investing to assist its introducing broker-dealer (IBD) and independent registered investment advisor (RIA) customers with capitalizing on the growing demand among sophisticated investors for global investment solutions.  The initiative combines two new comprehensive guidebooks, International Investing: An Investment Professional's Guide and International Investing: An Independent Advisor's Guide, with practice management expertise and extensive global resources and capabilities.

"The ability to offer investors a broad array of global investment options is a significant growth opportunity and provides a competitive advantage for financial services firms, especially those serving sophisticated clients, regardless of their business model," said Jim Crowley, managing director at Pershing.

Mark Tibergien, chief executive officer of Pershing Advisor Solutions added, "Through this initiative, Pershing provides advisors and investment professionals with information to enable them to incorporate international investing into their suite of investment solutions and demonstrates our commitment to providing our customers with the support they need to better serve their clients."

The International Investing guidebooks, developed in conjunction with Capco, a leading global provider of integrated consulting, technology and transformation services, offer Pershing's IBD and RIA customers with an in-depth analysis on the opportunities and risks of investing abroad as well as strategies on how to access emerging and frontier markets. The guidebooks also discuss how to effectively incorporate these solutions into specific business models.

The guidebooks cover:

  • Understanding International Investing – The guidebooks provide investment professionals and advisors with a detailed primer to help them articulate the value of investing internationally to their clients.  Citing leading research and institutional case studies, the guidebooks include annual investment returns and historical data to illustrate how diversifying globally has typically yielded better investment performance than investing solely in U.S. assets.
  • Trends and Opportunities in Emerging Markets – While investors may be timid at first to explore opportunities outside of developed markets; advisors are achieving steady growth for their clients invested in emerging markets. Emerging markets have grown by 93% from 2003, as compared to the S&P 500®, which has grown by only 6.5%; and BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are shown to have stronger and more positive GDP growth predictions than some developed countries. By 2040, the BRIC countries are forecasted to overtake the G7 nations in terms of GDP.
  • Accessing International Opportunities – An increasing range of investment options in international markets are available for non-institutional investors, enabling them to capitalize on opportunities historically limited to institutional investors. Indirect investing via pooled funds, including mutual funds and exchange traded funds, allows investors to gain exposure primarily to the equity capital markets of developed and emerging markets. Direct investing into international markets includes investing in tradable instruments on local stock exchanges through a broker. The guidebooks explore the costs, flexibilities and risks of direct and indirect approaches to investing abroad.
  • Developing a Program – International investing carries currency, liquidity, political and other risks that are unique to individual markets. Working with the right service provider can help mitigate these risks and provide a complete range of trading facilities and operational support, with access to assets across multiple investment markets and features such as multicurrency support and reporting. Firms can leverage a service provider's local market knowledge and expertise on legal and risk management issues, thereby increasing investor confidence.
