BNY Mellon Names Jane Sherburne as New General Counsel

Apr 15, 2010

NEW YORK, April 15, 2010 — BNY Mellon, the global leader in asset management and securities servicing, today announced that Jane Sherburne will be joining the company on May 3 as senior executive vice president and general counsel. She will report to Chairman and CEO Robert P. Kelly and will also be a member of BNY Mellon's Executive Committee. Sherburne is replacing Carl Krasik, who announced in October 2009 that he would be retiring this year.

Sherburne served as a partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Wilmer Cutler & Pickering, where her litigation practice included crisis management, Congressional investigations and complex civil litigation. She also served as special counsel to President Bill Clinton, where her team responded to White House ethics investigations. She later moved to Citigroup, serving first as deputy general counsel, overseeing Citi's global litigation division and providing corporate-level legal support, and then as general counsel for Citigroup's Global Consumer Group. In mid-2008, Sherburne left Citi to serve as Wachovia Corporation's general counsel, where she oversaw legal issues related to the financial crisis. Since 2009, she has conducted her own legal practice, specializing in crisis advising and congressional investigations. She received a bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Minnesota, and earned her law degree from Georgetown University, where she was editor of the law review.

"As a highly-respected leader in the global legal community, Jane will add tremendous value, and her wide-ranging experience in financial services as well as governmental and regulatory affairs makes her a natural fit for this position," Kelly said. "Her legal expertise, integrity and business acumen will play a vital role in helping guide our leadership team as we advance the company's long-term strategy and seize new opportunities for growth."

"This is an exciting time to be joining an organization at the forefront of its industry," Sherburne said. "I am looking forward to heading a dynamic legal department and helping to guide the future of a company that achieves success for its clients in rapidly changing markets."

Kelly also recognized Krasik, who joined the company in 1995, for his invaluable contributions. "Carl has provided exceptional guidance through some of the defining years of our long history. He helped the company navigate a highly complex and successful merger, prominent legal battles such as the precedent-setting Russia court case and numerous key regulatory issues — all in the midst of the largest financial markets crisis in almost a century. We will always be grateful for Carl's wise counsel and steady presence on the executive team."
