LONDON, December 7, 2009 — BNY Mellon Asset Servicing, the global leader in securities servicing, has been honoured for the second year in a row as European Custodian of the Year at the annual Funds Europe Awards held in London.

In making their selection, the judges commended BNY Mellon Asset Servicing for its "innovative product offering and excellent custody services." In addition, BNY Mellon was particularly praised for its performance throughout the global financial crisis.

Having also won the European Custodian of the Year award in 2008, this is the third year running that BNY Mellon Asset Servicing has picked up an award at the event — in 2007, the magazine named Nadine Chakar, Head of Europe, Middle East & Africa at BNY Mellon Asset Servicing as its Personality of the Year.

Tim Keaney, co-CEO of BNY Mellon Asset Servicing, said: "We are honoured that the hard work, creativity and commitment to service excellence on the part of everyone in our Asset Servicing business has once again been recognised in such a prestigious survey. It was just over three years ago that we announced our merger, and since then we have all travelled a long way, undertaking an arduous but nonetheless successful integration process and — following the global crisis — weathering the toughest conditions our industry has seen in decades. The fact that we are not only still standing, but standing tall, is first and foremost testament to the quality, dedication and vision of our people."

This latest award rounds off a highly successful year for BNY Mellon regarding securities services-related honours bestowed by financial services publications globally:

  • In March, BNY Mellon Asset Servicing scooped the title of 'Best Global Custodian' in The Asset magazine's Triple A Transaction Banking Awards 2009.
  • The same month, the Asset Servicing business was named 'Custodian of the Year' at the Global Pensions Awards 2009.
  • In April, BNY Mellon Asset Servicing was named 'Best Global Custodian' in Asia in Asia Asset Management magazine's 2008 Best of the Best Awards.
  • In May, BNY Mellon picked up seven honours at International Custody & Fund Administration's Global Awards 2009, including Hedge Fund Administrator, Transfer Agent, Custodian: Americas and Derivatives Valuation Provider.
  • In July, BNY Mellon was named Best Global Investor Services House by Euromoney magazine in the publication's 2009 Awards for Excellence.
  • At the beginning of this month, BNY Mellon received the two biggest awards at International Custody & Fund Administration's European Awards 2009, when it was honoured as European Securities Services Provider of the Year and Hedge Fund Administrator of The Year (over $100bn). In total, BNY Mellon picked up five awards.

During 2009 BNY Mellon Asset Servicing also put in very strong showings in the three key independent client-driven industry surveys. It received the highest number of 'Top-Rated' recognitions and 'Best in Class' awards in Global Custodian magazine's 2008 Global Custodian Bank Survey, whose results were announced in January. In March the company was ranked #1 overall in five categories — a feat matched by only one other provider — and ahead of its peer group* in a further seven categories in the 2009 R&M Survey of custody clients and fund managers. Finally, in May it shared the highest number of #1 rankings — eight in total — within its peer group in Global Investor magazine's 2009 Global Custody Survey of investment managers, insurance companies and pension funds.
