Corporate Support Helps Phipps Conservatory's Exterior Gardens Blossom

PITTSBURGH, September 9, 2009 — BNY Mellon, the global leader in asset management and securities servicing, is partnering with the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens to beautify the Exterior Gardens of Pittsburgh's landmark Lord and Burnham Conservatory, which will welcome the G-20 Heads of State to their two-day conference on Thursday, September 24. As the location of the Pittsburgh Summit's three opening events, BNY Mellon's support for the 116-year old cultural gem will be used to prepare and upgrade the dramatic front entrance, the Aquatics Garden that adjoins the East Wing of the Conservatory, the Outdoor Garden abutting the West Wing and the Japanese Courtyard Garden.

"Our social responsibility mission includes looking after local communities as well as demonstrating our commitment to sustainability," said Vince Sands, chairman of BNY Mellon of Pennsylvania and Executive Vice President of BNY Mellon Asset Servicing. "It is a privilege to help the 'Green Heart of Pittsburgh' prepare for its global debut."

With local roots dating back 140 years, BNY Mellon's community support is well-documented. Equally important is the company's comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability.

BNY Mellon develops products and services for the financial services marketplace including Socially Responsible Investment Vehicles and a Carbon Trading Platform; applies rigorous operating and energy efficiency standards to its buildings with an eye toward Energy Star® and LEED certification; measures and implements strategies to reduce its greenhouse gases; invests in renewable energy; and engages its employees so they too can become sustainability champions.

The company has purchased more than 96 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power, or enough green power to meet nearly one third of the organization's domestic purchased electricity use. Two of BNY Mellon's three commercial office buildings located in downtown Pittsburgh are Energy Star®-certified. It has applied for Gold LEED CI-certification for recent renovations to a portion of BNY Mellon Center. If approved, the project would be one of two Gold LEED-CI 2.0 certified projects in the region.

About Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens: The Green Heart of Pittsburgh

For Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the past is prologue to a future as ingenious as the region it serves. Built as a repository of horticultural excellence by Henry W. Phipps in 1893 at the height of Pittsburgh's industrial prowess, Phipps has evolved from the nation's first teaching conservatory to a distinguished eco-champion among America's 500 public gardens and an exhibit space ranked among the nation's top conservatory experiences. The transformation of Phipps' Victorian glasshouse jewel into a pace-setting model for advanced green building practices, sustainable development and environmental awareness has resulted in 12 prestigious awards.

Esteemed as the Green Heart of Pittsburgh and one of the world's greenest public gardens, Phipps is empowered by its mission to inspire and educate visitors with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and worldwide biodiversity through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.
