Mayoral delegation visits offices in Magarpatta City as part of April tour of India

PUNE, April 18, 2008 — The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Mr Alderman David Lewis, today visited the offices of Mellon India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Bank of New York Mellon, in Magarpatta City, Pune. The Lord Mayor is visiting a number of cities during his 12-day tour of India, his itinerary also taking in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi.

Following two years of rapid growth, The Bank of New York Mellon now employs 800 highly trained permanent staff in Pune performing a wide range of financial services processes on behalf of its securities servicing, asset management, wealth management and other global businesses. In total The Bank of New York Mellon currently employs 2,500 employees in India, including its Chennai and Mumbai facilities, giving the company a significant presence in one of the world's most rapidly growing markets.

The Bank of New York Mellon has deep ties with the City of London, and it employs some 4,000 staff across nine London locations, out of a total UK workforce of over 6,000 people. Globally the company employs 42,000 staff in 34 locations.

The Lord Mayor's visit to Magarpatta City was jointly hosted by Sheena Wilson, CEO of The Bank of New York Mellon's operations in Pune, and Julian Tregoning, a Director at The Bank of New York Mellon in London. His party were welcomed by a group of 20 employees representing many of the business activities conducted by the company in Pune.

Following a brief introduction by the local Executive Committee outlining the scope and scale of the Pune operation, The Lord Mayor took a brief tour of the company's Magarpatta City facilities. The Lord Mayor then presented awards to the winners of the company's Q1 2008 'Utopia' employee recognition scheme at a presentation held in the 'Taj Mahal' boardroom.

The Lord Mayor said: "I was extremely interested to meet the management team and the staff of The Bank of New York Mellon's administrative centre in Pune, and to hear why the company has chosen Pune, 'the Oxford of the East', for this facility. This is an excellent example of partnership between India and the global financial services industry. The company is to be commended for building a strong management team and implementing robust systems and processes in support of many of its global operations in both Europe and North America. I wish The Bank of New York Mellon continued success as it moves ahead with its growth plans in India."

Ms Wilson said: "I am delighted to welcome The Lord Mayor to Pune, and thank him so much for agreeing to present our quarterly employee awards. Our people are absolutely crucial to the success of our business: they are the ones who make our company's values — trust, client focus, teamwork, outperformance — a reality. They were thrilled to have this opportunity to meet such a prominent figure from the world's leading financial centre."

Mr Tregoning said: "It is always a pleasure to visit our operations here in Pune, but it is a particular honour to do so in the company of The Lord Mayor. Pune is one of The Bank of New York Mellon's regional operational 'centres of excellence', which collectively allow us to service our clients around the world on a seamless, 24/7 basis and as such are an integral part of our global strategy."

As head of the City of London Corporation, The Lord Mayor presides over its governing bodies — the Court of Aldermen and the Court of Common Council. He is also Chief Magistrate of the City of London, Admiral of the Port of London, Chancellor of City University and President or Patron of many other civic and charitable organisations.

He also has a much wider business role, working for Britain as a whole and supporting the City of London as the world's leading international financial centre, and also promoting the wider UK financial services industry and related businesses abroad.

The UK financial services industry is a major source of employment and is the greatest wealth generator in London; it is a highly international operation and 40% of the workforce within the City is employed by overseas companies.

A key focus for The Lord Mayor is his Mayoral Charitable Appeal, which this year is devoted to 'Investing in Healthy Lives, Healthy Vision, Healthy Futures' through his support for two organisations, Wellbeing of Women (WoW) and ORBIS.

WoW funds research that will end the distress of miscarriage, the trauma of pre-term birth and the tragedy of disability; advances that have resulted from this research include ultrasound and cervical cancer screening.

ORBIS is dedicated to blindness prevention and treatment in developing countries — over the past 25 years more than 450 medical volunteers have given their time and expertise free of charge, more that 26,000 patients have been treated and more than four million patients have benefited from ORBIS training in India, Africa, China and elsewhere.
