PITTSBURGH, November 20, 2007 — The all-volunteer Pittsburgh Jazz Society (PJS), which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, has been named as the recipient of the 2007 Mellon Jazz Community Award presented by The Bank of New York Mellon. Taking the form of an original glass sculpture by noted Pennsylvania glass artist Kathleen Mulcahy, the award is accompanied by the establishment of a $5,000 jazz scholarship fund in the name of PJS, which will be administered by Duquesne University's Mary Pappert School of Music.

"We salute the Pittsburgh Jazz Society for its 20 years of leadership as an enduring force and voice for jazz in our region. With an all-volunteer staff and limited resources, the tireless efforts of the PJS membership have made Pittsburgh synonymous with great jazz," said Rose Gabbianelli, executive vice president and global director of Public Affairs for The Bank of New York Mellon.

The Pittsburgh Jazz Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, preservation and perpetuation of all jazz through education, performance, partnering and community outreach for members and the general public. Visit http://www.pittsburghjazz.org/ for information on becoming a member or information on upcoming PJS events.

"Our goal has been to bring jazz lovers together to enjoy established artists and also introduce young musicians to our rich traditions," said John Mowod, PJS president. "As a volunteer and someone who personally appreciates Pittsburgh's jazz heritage and on behalf of our entire organization, I want to express our sincere thanks to The Bank of New York Mellon for this honor."

The Manchester Craftsmen's Guild received last year's Mellon Jazz Community Award, and previous recipients have included the late Walt Harper, Tony Mowod, Joe Negri, the African American Jazz Preservation Society of Pittsburgh, the Afro-American Music Institute, WDUQ-FM, Duquesne University's Mary Pappert School of Music and the University of Pittsburgh's Annual Jazz Seminar and Concert.
