BOSTON — February 5, 2015 — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is aware that Anthem, Inc. was the target of a very sophisticated external cyber-attack. We are diligently working to gather more information and understand the scope of this issue and how it might impact any of our members.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield System consists of 37 independently operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield member companies. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Anthem Inc. are separate and distinct companies.

The protection of our members' privacy and personal information is of our highest concern. We make every effort to ensure that all personal information maintained by us is secure and safe.

We are working aggressively to find out more information as Anthem conducts their investigation into the cyber-attack. If we find out our members are affected, we will formally communicate with them in writing and take appropriate, timely action. Free credit monitoring and identity protection services will be provided if it is determined that any of our members have been affected.
