GREELEY, Colo. (Dec. 2, 2019) – Being verified as an adult burn center by the American Burn Association means patients and the community have third-party assurance of the program’s commitment to excellence and providing quality care.

The Western States Burn Center at North Colorado Medical Center has successfully completed the review process with the American Burn Association. The ABA conducted a site review Oct. 23-24 as part of the Burn Center Verification Program. According to the ABA, verification as a burn center shows the government, insurance organizations, patients and families that a center gives high quality patient care to a person from the time of injury through rehabilitation.

Lyndsay Deeter, MD, burn surgeon and the medical director for the Western States Burn Center, said the verification is a seal of approval for the quality of care provided in Greeley. “We have excellent patient care along with a robust program that includes quality improvement measures, outreach and education and a team approach to care that involves departments from across the hospital.”

Rebecca Garber, NP, added that specialists in areas like rehabilitation, chaplaincy and behavioral health contribute to excellent patient care by supporting the patient as they leave the burn unit and return home.

The extensive review process covered 120 criteria ranging from quality of care to performance improvement programs and research. The burn center team addressed each aspect and gave documentation to support their comments.

The Western States Burn Center opened at NCMC in 1981 and expanded into its current location in 2009. The team also has incorporated telemedicine into the program to better serve patients in neighboring states. The program sees patients from Montana, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Idaho, Kansas and Colorado.

The ABA lists 123 burn centers in the United States with 68 designated as verified programs.
