WORLAND, Wyo. (Aug. 12, 2019) –With a passion for lifelong learning, pharmacist Michelle Hamilton was awarded preceptor of the year from the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy for 2018-2019. A preceptor at Washakie Medical Center since 2008, Hamilton was one of two award recipients from the School of Pharmacy this year.

Hamilton was selected after receiving numerous nominations over the years from second and fourth-year pharmacy students. Antoinette Brown, the School of Pharmacy’s coordinator of experiential education, said students spoke very highly of Hamilton and her ability to precept.

“The school considers it quite an honor,” Brown said. “It comes from the students. Their feedback highlights what a preceptor does day in and day out, not only as an educator but as a healthcare practitioner.”

Hamilton graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2005 and initially went to work as a clinical pharmacist in Billings, Montana, where she served in a variety of settings. In 2007, Hamilton moved to Worland and started as a pharmacist with Washakie Medical Center. A year later she began her role as a preceptor.

Hamilton says having grown up north of Worland on a family farm, she was excited to return to the area and work as a hospital pharmacist.

“We have a strong pharmacy team at the hospital, and I enjoy all of the challenges that come with operating a critical access hospital pharmacy,” she said.
Having precepted for more than 10 years, Hamilton is known for building authentic relationships and giving students hands-on training by letting them experience all sides of the role. She is also known for working hand-in-hand with students to set goals and allowing them to focus on an area of interest during the last week of each rotation.

When Hamilton isn’t working or teaching, she loves to spend time with her husband and her two children on their family farm and ranch.
