Banner welcomes renowned orthopedist to staff

PHOENIX (Oct. 2, 2017) Banner – University Medical Center and the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix are pleased to announce the joint recruitment of Michael McKee, MD, a fellowship-trained and board certified orthopedic surgeon, as the new Chair of Orthopedic Surgery and physician executive at Banner University Medicine Orthopedic and Spine Institute, a partnership between Banner Health and The CORE Institute.

“After a national search, Dr. McKee was selected to lead our Department of Orthopedics, in our goal of achieving national distinction in our missions of education, research and clinical service,” said Guy L. Reed, MD, MS, dean of the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix. “Dr. McKee is a highly successful translational researcher, educator and world-renowned orthopedic surgeon from a premier program at the University of Toronto. We are thrilled to have him bring his talents and leadership skills to Arizona.”

In addition to leading the Banner – University Medicine Orthopedic and Spine Institute, Dr. McKee has been named the inaugural department chair of orthopedics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. In 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network, forming Banner – University Medicine. Through this 30-year affiliation agreement, Banner and UA are partnering to enhance education, research and clinical care.  

“Dr. McKee is a world-renowned surgeon who has received numerous awards and distinctions for his research in orthopedic trauma and upper extremity surgery, and we are excited he has chosen to join our team at The CORE Institute,” said Jason Scalise, MD, Vice Chairman of Growth and Strategy at The CORE Institute.  “Dr. McKee is a valuable addition to our trauma team and academic program at the Orthopedic and Spine Institute.”

Dr. McKee remains a consistent leader in the orthopedic field having been recognized for numerous awards in the healthcare field. He has a distinguished background as a surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital, as well as a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada.

Dr. McKee completed his fellowship training in orthopedic trauma and lower and upper extremity reconstruction from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and a fellowship at Toronto East General Hospital. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree at University of Toronto in Canada. Dr. McKee is a member of numerous professional associations, including American Orthopedic Association, AO International and Orthopedic Trauma Association.
