GREELEY, Colo. (Sept. 20, 2017) – North Colorado Family Residency Program resident physician Michael Bradfield, MD, MPH was honored for his accomplishments by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) this month.

Dr. Bradfield received the organization’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education at the 2017 AAFP Family Medicine Experience in San Antonio.

Of the 3,500 eligible family medicine resident physicians, only 12 are selected for the 2017 AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. The esteemed award started in 1952 and recognizes family medicine resident physicians for their leadership, community involvement and exemplary patient care and interpersonal relationships. Winners also receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Bradfield was drawn to the field after witnessing a lack of access to care in both the urban United States and overseas during his travels. Growing up in urban Nashville, he served as an AmeriCorps volunteer in Miami, studied medicine in rural Appalachia and worked in Central and South America and small towns in Colorado. The experience gave Bradfield a diverse skill set that contributes to his success in family medicine.

“The idea of being trained to collaborate with a community as a whole to address general health issues, while also acquiring the skills and confidence to address the health care needs of any individual that would walk through the clinic door is what makes me feel alive,” said Bradfield.

Bradfield received his medical degree from Quillen College of Medicine – East Tennessee State University and is currently the chief resident at North Colorado Family Medicine in Greeley. He is proficient at reading, writing and speaking Spanish as well as proficient at speaking Guaraní, a national language of Paraguay.

In 2011, former NCFM resident physician Lisa Young, DO, received the same award. Another NCFM graduate, Lesley Brooks, MD, won the award in 2010.
