Banner Health team of surgeons excel in robotic surgery

LOVELAND, Colo. – McKee Medical Center in Loveland has been named the first and only Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery in Colorado by the Surgical Review Corporation.
This designation is based on volume, outcomes and the different types of procedures offered within a program.

Robotic surgery offers a minimally-invasive surgical option to many patients facing an open procedure. This approach offers the surgeon magnified, high-definition vision with the ability to control surgical instruments much like a human hand to see and access anatomy. This allows surgeons to operate as if they were doing open surgery, but through much smaller incisions.

The four surgeons certified as Robotic Surgeons of Excellence are:

“I’m so proud of the work the surgical team at McKee put into achieving this designation. These surgeons have collaborated to build a program that is giving the best care possible for their patients,“ said Margo Karsten, chief executive officer for Banner Health in Northern Colorado.

Dr. Crane started doing robotic surgeries in September 2009 and has done more than 2,000 robotic procedures.  He does all types of reconstructive female pelvic surgery, and complicated hysterectomies.

“To be able to offer this approach to patients who otherwise would receive an open approach is huge,” said Dr. Crane.  “This allows for much less pain and blood loss, quicker return to normal activity, shorter hospital stays and less chance of wound infection.”

Dr. Crane said a new recovery unit specializing in care after robotic surgery is geared specifically to the needs of those patients. Using an Enhanced Recovery after Surgery model, the surgeons have worked together with multiple disciplines to provide a continuum of care that focuses on the patient and family, and education that begins with the initial office visit and helps navigate the process of healing through all phases of care.

At McKee, these four surgeons offer robotic-assisted surgery for hysterectomies, uterine prolapse, fibroids, gynecological cancer staging, conditions of the prostate and kidney, hernia, colon and other general surgeries.
