GILBERT, Ariz. (Feb. 20, 2019) -- Banner Health and Gilbert Unified School District are teaming on Feb. 22 up to provide invaluable life-saving skills to high school students; skills that can be used in mass-casualty incidents as well for household accidents.
"Stop the Bleed'' training will be held Friday at Campo Verde High School, 3870 S Quartz St., in Gilbert. It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and train more than 120 students.
Media is invited to film the training and interview students, teachers and trainers and participate in training themselves. Participants will learn how to use nearby items to help stop the flow of blood in an accident; applying tourniquets also will be covered.

“Stop the Bleed’’ is a national initiative begun by U.S. trauma surgeons to help teach people on what to do if they are involved in major trauma event such as a shooting or bombing. One of the group’s key messages is training on how to prevent uncontrolled bleeding because it is the number-one cause of death from trauma.
The program was created as a response to the Sandy Hook school shooting that took the lives of 27 people.
"So often in times of mass injury or trauma, the loss of blood truly determines the outcome and recovery,’’ said Melissa Luxton, trauma prevention coordinator at Banner Health. “We just think it is vital that people in our community have the knowledge to help others.’’
