PHOENIX (April. 24, 2018) – Banner Health is expanding the BannerRX Box service, a user-friendly medication-dispensing kiosk, with its second installment of BannerRX Box, a MedAvail Technologies device.
The device aims to make the patient experience more convenient through the integration of remote dispensing of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix was the first hospital in Arizona to implement the MedAvail® prescription dispensing kiosk in 2016 in its Emergency department.
The latest installment is at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottsdale. Each BannerRX Box is specially stocked to reflect the needs of the patients at that facility.
“The medications stored in each kiosk are customized to what the physicians typically prescribe at each site. We have the ability to pull this data and stock the appropriate medications and quantities,” said Michael Young, Banner Retail Pharmacy Services senior director.
The BannerRX Box is a fast and simple way for patients to fill a prescription immediately following treatment. The kiosk dispenses prescriptions much like a vending machine, and includes the help of a pharmacist and pharmacy technician through secure video and audio assistance. The machine accepts all of the prescription insurance carriers that Banner Family Pharmacy does; and if payment is necessary, the machine can process debit or credit cards. The prescription is dispensed directly from the kiosk to the patient.
“It takes 90 seconds for the medication to be selected and labeled in the device. There may be slightly more time to process the prescription if clarification is needed by the prescriber or a prior authorization is required on the patient’s insurance plan,” said Young.
The next installment is scheduled to come to the Banner Casa Grande Medical Center Emergency department.
