PHOENIX (June 15, 2018) – From swinging on the jungle gyms to hanging out in the pool, kids have a wide choice of fun summertime activities but those activities can become dangerous without proper precautions, says Tracey Fejt, RN, injury prevention coordinator at Cardon Children’s Medical Center.

“We need to remember not to let our kids out in the sun between 10 and 3,’’ says Fejt, noting that dehydration and heat-related issues can really affect kids.

In the ready-to-edit video, Fejt details the most common summertime injuries:

  • Dehydration and heat-related issues: It’s important for kids to drink five to 11 glasses of water a day. Drinking water is especially critical for boys because they sweat more.

  • Drowning: Already seven children have died from drowning this summer in the metro Phoenix area. Fejt gives tips on how to keep kids safe around water and gives an extensive list of water-safety precautions.

  • Falls: Falls are the number-one injury among children coming into the Emergency department for care. Fejt outlines tips on what to look out for in playground equipment.

  • Burns: Children’s skin is thinner than adults’ and more susceptible to burns from hot pavements, seat-belt buckles and even playground equipment.
