National health care journalists to hear speakers, tour facilities at annual conference April 12-15

PHOENIX (April 10, 2018) – Banner Health and the University of Arizona are proud to be co-sponsors of the Association of Healthcare Journalists annual meeting being held here April 12-15, 2018.

The conference, which usually draws 700 to 800 attendees, will feature four days of workshops, panels, roundtables and field trips covering the latest topics in medical science, health policy, public health, medical education, consumer health and the business of health care.

More than 12 speakers from Banner and the UA Health Sciences, including the UA Colleges of Medicine in Phoenix and Tucson, will present at the conference. Experts from the fields of Alzheimer’s, cancer, climate change, genetic testing, hospital finance, medical education, pandemics, precision medicine, nutrition, Trump-era health-care economics and Valley fever, will speak.

In addition, both organizations will provide joint field trips for reporters, including visits to sites such as:

  • Banner Health’s TeleICU , which provides long-distance extra monitoring and care to intensive-care patients thousands of miles away

  • MedLink, an in-flight medical emergency call center that helps thousands of patients a year. It is housed at located inside Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix.

  • The UA  College of Medicine – Phoenix’s Center for Simulation and Innovation, where reporters will scrub in and experience a suspended reality labor and delivery.

  • The UA College of Medicine – Phoenix  Center for Applied NanoBioscience and Innovation research lab. Reporters will see Star Trek-like devices including organ-on-a-chip technology, which acts as a digital stomach; a rapid blood test being developed for NASA to determine astronauts; radiation exposure with a pinprick; and an innovative mobile health platform that can diagnose pathogens, Ebola and neglected tropical diseases.
