$2.3 million infrastructure modernization efforts improve system resiliency and help protect local watersheds

YORK, Pa. (May 13, 2026) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that it will continue improving York’s wastewater system, with approximately $2.3 million in upgrades planned this year to deliver more reliable service, reduce disruptions and help protect local waterways for customers and the community.

“Customers count on us to provide safe, reliable wastewater service every day,” said Scott Thomas, director of engineering project delivery for Pennsylvania American Water. “Many of York’s pipes are decades old, and these improvements allow us to strengthen our system in a way that reduces inconvenience for customers while protecting public health and the environment.”

Using advanced trenchless technology, the company will renew aging sewer pipes without major excavation. This approach allows crews to strengthen pipes from the inside, reducing construction time, limiting impacts to roads and neighborhoods and helping keep project costs down.

As part of this year’s work, approximately four miles of wastewater pipes throughout the city will be rehabilitated. These improvements will help prevent leaks and blockages, reduce stormwater intrusion and support the long-term health of York’s wastewater system and local watershed.

During work, customers experience short-term, localized activity near their property, mainly during daytime hours. Since the process uses existing sewer access points, most work is underground, avoiding long road closures or major neighborhood disruption. Temporary service interruptions are rare, and customers will be notified beforehand, if needed.
