Indiana American Water Announces Temporary Treatment Change and Scheduled Main Flushing in Terre Haute

Terre Haute, Ind. – April 1, 2026 – Indiana American Water is notifying customers of the Terre Haute water system about an upcoming temporary change in water treatment and a scheduled water main flushing program designed to maintain high water quality, system reliability, and fire protection capabilities.

As part of routine system maintenance, Indiana American Water will implement a temporary change to its water treatment process from April 6, 2026, through the end of May. During this period, the company will transition to using “free chlorine,” a stronger disinfectant that does not contain ammonia. This process is commonly paired with distribution system flushing to help clean pipes and enhance overall water quality.

Customers may notice a more pronounced chlorine taste or smell. This is normal, temporary, and poses no health risk. However, individuals with specific healthcare needs requiring purified or filtered water should consult their healthcare provider.

“This temporary treatment change and our scheduled flushing program are essential components of maintaining a safe and reliable water system,” said David Baker, West Central Indiana Operations Manager, Indiana American Water. “These efforts help us clean the system, improve water quality, and help ensure our hydrants and infrastructure continue to operate at peak performance for the customers and communities we serve.”

Indiana American Water apologizes for any inconvenience and thanks customers for their cooperation as we conduct this essential work to maintain and enhance the water system.  The company also requests that travelers slow down when approaching the crews, who will be flushing fire hydrants from 7:00-4:00 p.m. on weekdays.

More information and a map of affected areas is available at Indianaamwater.com / Alerts or by calling 1-800-492-8373.
