Virginia American Water Announces $54.3 Million Invested in 2025 Statewide Infrastructure Upgrades

Strengthening System Reliability and Delivering High-Quality Water for Customers

Alexandria, VA – MARCH 9, 2026 – Virginia American Water announced today its 2025 summary of investments for system improvements, totaling $54.3 million in water and wastewater system upgrades throughout its service area across Virginia.

“Delivering safe, clean and reliable water and wastewater service requires consistent, proactive investment in our systems,” said Laura Runkle, President of Virginia American Water. “These investments are focused on strengthening reliability, modernizing aging infrastructure, and minimizing service disruptions for our customers across the state. By continuing to invest in our systems today, we are helping deliver resilient, high-quality service for the communities we serve well into the future.”

Annual investments support critical upgrades throughout the company’s water and wastewater systems, including treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, pipelines, and metering equipment.

System improvement highlights for 2025 include:

  • Hopewell: Invested $1.5 million to replace 3,280 feet of main on Poplar Street from Miles Avenue to Crestline Boulevard. Upgrading to new pipes increases system reliability and resiliency.
  • Hopewell: Completed the final stages of building a new domestic elevated tank, adding capacity of 2.5 million gallons for domestic use. The 2025 investment was $750,000 and the total investment in the project, which started in 2022, was $11 million. The new structure adds storage in the water system, allowing for more reliable water availability for firefighting and helps improve customers’ water pressure.
  • Prince William County: Invested $1.2 million to install a new chemical clarifier at our wastewater plant on Delaney Road to help ensure our systems meet environmental regulations and protect local waterways. The total cost of the project which started in 2024 is $2.4 million. This improvement will allow the company to continue to meet requirements for wastewater treatment plants throughout the Chesapeake Bay region.
  • Alexandria: Invested $2 million to make electrical upgrades at the Braddock Road pump station. An upgrade to the electrical system will help improve reliability and energy efficiency.
  • Alexandria: Invested $1.4 million to upgrade the main from 6” pipe to 8” pipe on Old Dominion Boulevard (Beverley Drive to Tennessee Avenue) in order to increase service reliability for firefighting and household use.

Virginia American Water continues to make long-term investments in the communities it serves, modernizing aging infrastructure to strengthen service for residents. Over the past ten years, Virginia American Water has directed $397 million toward infrastructure and capital improvements across our communities, updating aging systems and replacing or installing new water main.
