Press Releases
Alexandria, VA, (March 6, 2026) – Beginning the week of March 9, Virginia American Water is planning to begin a $3 million infrastructure upgrade project in Alexandria replacing 5,000 feet of aging water main on six different streets.
The work will take place at the following locations:
- Cedar Street (King Street to Commonwealth Avenue)
- Commonwealth Avenue (West Linden Street to Sunset Drive)
- King Street (West Rosemont Avenue to Russell Road)
- Sunset Drive (King Street to Commonwealth Avenue)
- West Linden Street (Russell Road to Commonwealth Avenue)
- West Rosemont Avenue (King Street to Commonwealth Avenue)
This project’s objective is to modernize existing water mains to help improve service reliability and increase water flows for household use and firefighting. The company is replacing 5,000 feet of aging 4" and 6" cast iron pipes that have reached the end of their lifespan with modern 8" ductile iron pipe.
“We continue to strategically invest and make improvements in our system’s long-term infrastructure,” said Charles Piekanski, Vice President of Operations at Virginia American Water. “By upgrading these water mains, we are investing in Alexandria’s future.”
Weather permitting, our contractor, Utilities Unlimited, will begin work on or about the week of March 9 and be completed by the end of September 2026, including street restoration. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, during varying times between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. depending on work and weather conditions. Work on weekends and evenings is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule.
It is important to note that our contractor will try to keep one traffic lane open at all times to local traffic as long as it can be done safely. The construction will not impede residents’ access to their homes and driveways. Please follow traffic control and “NO PARKING” signage that will be posted by the City of Alexandria. During construction, noise is unavoidable; however crews will do their best to minimize disturbances. Customers may experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the duration of these temporary inconveniences. To report water-related emergencies such as leaks, main breaks or other service disruptions, customers can submit a service request on the company’s website: www.virginiaamwater.com.
