NITRO, W.Va., (March 3, 2026) - West Virginia American Water announced today that it has completed its acquisition of the wastewater system assets of the Nitro Regional Wastewater Utility from the City of Nitro. The purchase of the wastewater system, which serves approximately 4,500 customer connections, was approved by the Public Service Commission of West Virginia (PSC) and reflects West Virginia American Water’s ongoing commitment to strengthening water and wastewater infrastructure and enhancing service in communities across the state.
“The sale of the Nitro Regional Wastewater Utility to West Virginia American Water is a major win for our city,” said Dave Casebolt, Mayor of the City of Nitro. “West Virginia American Water has the expertise and resources to make the critical system improvements our community has needed for years, helping to ensure more reliable service for our residents. Just as importantly, the proceeds from the sale will stay in Nitro and directly support projects that strengthen and improve our community.”
West Virginia American Water is committed to investing over $42 million in system improvements for the Nitro wastewater system over the next five years, including repairs and upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant, replacement of collection system pump stations, and separation of the combined sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines. These upgrades are vital to continue building a strong, reliable and resilient system to better serve the Nitro community.
“We're thrilled to begin providing wastewater service to the residents of Nitro and are excited to welcome five new employees from the Nitro Regional Wastewater Utility to our West Virginia American Water team,” said Scott Wyman, President of West Virginia American Water. “Their valuable experience and expertise with the system will help ensure a smooth transition of services.”
West Virginia American Water will begin providing wastewater service to Nitro customers on March 3, 2026. Customers will receive additional information in the mail from West Virginia American Water in the coming week to facilitate a smooth transition. Nitro wastewater customers, who already receive their water service from West Virginia American Water, can now receive the company’s same superior customer service and assistance program benefits with their wastewater service.
