Press Releases
Alexandria, VA. (February 16, 2026) – Virginia American Water is planning to begin a $1.5 million infrastructure upgrade project in Alexandria on Commonwealth Avenue.
“Investing in our system’s infrastructure continues to be a priority as we begin 2026,” said Charles Piekanski, Vice President of Operations at Virginia American Water. “This partnership with the City of Alexandria and our investment is a testament to our commitment to providing safe, clean, and reliable water to the communities we serve.”
The work will take place on Commonwealth Avenue, from 3700 Commonwealth Avenue to Ashby Street. The primary purpose of the project is to relocate a section of our water main to make space for the City of Alexandria to install new storm pipe in its existing location. When we relocate our main, we will take advantage of the opportunity to upgrade our infrastructure by installing 2,500 feet of modern 12-inch pipe at the new location. Weather permitting, work will start the week of February 16, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2026 including the final street restoration. Crews will work Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and traffic restrictions will be in place for the duration of the project. The construction will not impede residents’ access to their homes and driveways.
In 2025, Virginia American Water invested more than $54 million in water and wastewater infrastructure system upgrades throughout its service areas. These upgrades both bolster the resilience of the company’s infrastructure and support the economic health and public health of communities across the Commonwealth.
During construction, noise is unavoidable; however crews will do their best to minimize disturbances. Customers may experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the duration of these temporary inconveniences. To report water-related emergencies such as leaks, main breaks or other service disruptions, customers can submit a service request on the company’s website: www.virginiaamwater.com.
