Pennsylvania American Water Announces $9 Million Water Line Upgrade Project in Scranton
More than six miles of pipe to be replaced

SCRANTON, Pa. (February 24, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of a more than $9 million project to replace over 30,000 feet of water main in the City of Scranton to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and increase water flows for firefighting. The project replaces pipe dating back to 1889.

“Providing reliable service to our customers means continuous investment in our infrastructure,” said Daniel Rickard, director of engineering, Pennsylvania American Water. “We prioritize projects based on a number of factors, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, age of existing pipe, and history of main breaks or service interruptions.”

The project, which started earlier this month, involves replacing more than 30,000 feet of existing smaller diameter pipe with new eight- and 12-inch ductile iron mains along several city streets, including:

  • Brook St. (from Pittston Ave. to Prospect Ave.)
  • Cherry St. (from Pittston Ave. to Prospect Ave.)
  • Locust St. (from Pittston Ave. to Prospect Ave.)
  • Electric St. (from N. Washington Ave. to Monsey Ave.)
  • Euclid Ave. (from Dorothy St. to Dickens St.)
  • Hollister Ave. (from Wells St. to Spring St.)
  • Jackson S. (from S. Lincoln Ave. to N. Hyde Park Ave.)
  • Johler Ave. (from Bottle St. to Providence Road)
  • Linda Lane (from Washburn St. to Division St.)
  • Maple St. (from S. Webster Ave. to Meadow Ave.)
  • Garfield Ave. (from Dorothy St. to Dickens St.)
  • Sumner Ave. (from Farr St. to Euclid Ave.)
  • Webster Ave. (from Poplar St. to Olive St.)
  • Pittston Ave. (from Davis St. to Sanders St.)
  • Prospect Ave. (from Fig St. to Beech St.)
  • Ridge Ave. (from Ash St. to William St.)
  • Saginaw St. (from S. Webster Ave. to Prospect Ave.)
  • Sanders St. (from Pittston Ave. to Birney Ave.)
  • Taylor Ave. (from William St. to Myrtle St.)
  • Throop St. (from Hollister Ave. to Throop St.)
  • Wyoming Ave. (from Electric St. to Green Ridge Ave.)

Additionally, the company is upgrading water lines along several streets in Dunmore, replacing more than 2,800 feet of pipe at a cost of over $800,000:

  • Ambrose St. (from Chestnut St. to Willow St.)
  • Apple St. (from E. Drinker St. to Mortimer St.)
  • Corner St. (from Apple St. to Chestnut St.)

Crews will work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the water main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains this summer, with final restoration and paving scheduled for fall.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. For worksite safety, Pennsylvania American Water asks that members of the public do not approach its employees or contractors. For more information, contact the company’s customer service center at 1-800-565-7292.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
