Trending Destinations Aussies are obsessed with this Autumn
Tripadvisor data reveals Yanuca Island and Paris are seeing biggest growth for international travel, while Windsor, NSW is top of the list for staycations

AUSTRALIA, 9 March, 2022 - With temperatures cooling and summer almost out the door, the long awaited arrival of autumn is imminent.  Tripadvisor today released its seasonal Autumn Travel Index, using a combination of search and sentiment data to reveal what - and where - is hot this season. After a hot summer with new variants curbing many holiday plans, data shows that Australians are gearing up for a great escape.

Despite the rising cost of fuel and inflation overall, Aussies aren’t willing to let this hamper their autumn travel plans. In fact, more than half of Aussies (52%) are planning on travelling this autumn (1 March, 2022 - 31 May, 2022) ,with over a third (36%) planning on taking two or more trips. That compares with over a third (40%) of Aussies who travelled in the same period last year.

On top of more trips, Australian travellers are also planning to splash more cash. Of those who travelled last year and plan to do so again, over half (52%) plan to spend more than they did in 2021, with one in eight (13%) planning to spend significantly more. Tripadvisor site data supports this sentiment, as average spend per booking for Australian travellers this autumn is up a massive 78% year-on-year.

Tripadvisor search data shows that the most popular dates for Aussies this autumn are 11 March, 31 March and 15 April, but where are they off to?

When looking at the destinations overseas which have seen the biggest year-on-year increase in searches by Aussies for trips this autumn, Fiji’s Yanuca Island topped the list, followed by Paris, France.

While international travel is on the up, domestic travel is still the preferred option. Over three-quarters (78%) of Aussie travellers say they’ll travel within Australia between March and May this year. Windsor in New South Wales came in first in terms of year-on-year growth of Tripadvisor clicks from Aussie travellers this autumn, followed by Canberra and Adelaide.

Unsurprisingly, given the toll of the pandemic on us over the past two years, Australians cited rest and relaxation as the most popular purpose for their trips this autumn. ‘Pool’ came out as one of the most searched and booked accommodation amenities on Tripadvisor and a quarter (25%) of Aussie respondents said they are planning a road trip to get away this autumn.

Nearly half (43%) of Australians said that they’re looking to experience something new and unique on their next trip. When looking at the most popular experiences categories for Aussies this autumn, Wine Tours, Nature & Wildlife and Off-Road Tours came out on top. Highly rated experiences in these categories available to book on Tripadvisor this autumn include: Barossa Valley Wineries Tour with Tastings and Lunch from Adelaide, Full-Day Whale Sharks Swimming Experience on Ningaloo Reef and Worimi Sand Dunes Quad Bike Tour.
