Aviation Dept. Receives Safety Recertification
Carolina Public Sector Star Award Presented by N.C. Labor Department

Oct. 29, 2021 - The Aviation Department has received Carolina Public Sector Star recertification for its administration, development and operations’ divisions from the North Carolina Department of Labor.

The Carolina Public Sector Star program recognizes and honors local and state agencies for their leadership in occupational safety and health. The Aviation Departments’ administration, development and operations work groups first received Star certification in 2018. The facilities division was certified in 2019 and is eligible for recertification in 2022.

The Aviation Department is a department of the City of Charlotte and operates Charlotte Douglas International Airport. “Charlotte Douglas is committed to being a leader in safety for our community as well as the aviation industry,” said CLT’s Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. “The Carolina Public Sector Star designation certainly places us at the forefront. CLT is proud to be the first Airport operator in the country and first City of Charlotte department to receive the Carolina Public Sector Star designation for all divisions.”

North Carolina Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson made the recertification announcement on Oct. 27 at in-person and virtual events for Aviation employees. “In an especially challenging time, these two divisions of the City of Charlotte Aviation Department have shown a strong commitment to workplace safety and health by maintaining their coveted Carolina Star status,” Dobson said. “The dedication of the employers and employees to safety is the reason why North Carolina is one of the safest states in which to work, and they deserve this distinguished recognition.”

Carolina Star participants are proactive and partner with the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division to prevent fatalities, injuries and illnesses through a system focused on:

 *   Management commitment and leadership

 *   Employee involvement and participation

 *   Hazard identification and evaluation

 *   Hazard prevention and control

 *   Safety and health training

The benefits of being a star worksite include reduced workers’ compensation costs and improved employee motivation to work safely, leading to better quality and productivity. Star participant sites generally experience from 60 to 80% fewer lost workday injuries than would be expected of a site of the same size in their industries.
