Electric Bus Fleet Earns Excellence Award

June 16, 2022 CLT’s commitment to sustainability received a stamp of approval as the Airport’s electric bus fleet earned the Clean Cities/ Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition Award from Centralina Regional Council as part of its Region of Excellence recognition program on May 11.

The Airport’s fleet of 10 busses are 100% battery-electric, burn zero diesel fuel and emit zero emissions. Other advantages over diesel buses are less noise, fewer vehicle parts to repair and replace, lower operating costs, a lifespan of 12 years versus 10 years and a smoother, quieter ride for passengers.

As part of the Aviation Department’s Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, the Airport is replacing its 70 diesel-powered buses with 50 electric buses within the next seven to 10 years.

“We want to become a leader in environmental stewardship by implementing sustainability practices that benefit the Airport as well as our local community,” Aviation Director/CEO Haley Gentry said. “The Airport is committed in doing its part to help protect the environment and foster a healthier community.”

CLT’s transition to electric buses supports the City of Charlotte’s Strategic Energy Action Plan (SEAP), which strives to have city fleet and facilities fueled by 100 percent zero-carbon sources by 2030.
