By this time next year, anyone driving by Charlotte Douglas International Airport will be greeted by eye-catching structures designed to create a welcoming front door to the Airport and the City of Charlotte.
The centerpiece of the project is the architectural crown monument on Wilkinson Boulevard at Josh Birmingham Parkway - the Airport’s official entrance. The design – from the points of the crown to the lights – harken to the sleek, polished design of the recently opened Concourse A Expansion.
Two signs branding the Airport’s official identifier, CLT, will be placed on the either side of Airport property on Wilkinson Boulevard. The land around these signs will landscaped to remove visual distractions along the busy highway.
Once complete in the late summer or early fall of 2020, the signage will foster a sense of arrival and help motorists better identify the primary entrance to one of the world’s busiest Airports.
The monument signage was approved Sept. 23 by the Charlotte City Council, which awarded the construction contract totaling $4,048,100 to Edison Foard Construction Services of Charlotte.
CLT, a City of Charlotte department, welcomes more than 46 million passengers annually. CLT is ranked among the world’s top 10 busiest airports, averaging 1,400 daily arrivals and departures. CLT is served by eight major carriers, 15 regional carriers and three foreign flag carriers with nonstop service to 178 destinations, including 37 international locations and 3 U.S. territories. An enterprise fund, the Airport is self-sustaining and does not collect tax dollars. Airport revenue funds all capital and operating costs.
