Company's "Powering Potential" Focus Targets Basic Needs and Workforce Development

PITTSBURGH, December 16, 2009 — BNY Mellon has approved more than $900,000 in fourth-quarter 2009 grants benefiting several Pittsburgh-area nonprofit organizations. This year, nearly $2.9 million in grants were awarded to about 50 regional nonprofits through the BNY Mellon Charitable Foundation. Through a combination of these grants, along with sponsorships and company support for employees' volunteer and fundraising efforts, the company contributed approximately $4.8 million throughout the region this year.

Powering Potential, BNY Mellon's charitable giving focus, is designed to help others in need by concentrating on basic needs and workforce development. BNY Mellon works with community partners to provide food, clothing, energy and housing assistance to those who require immediate help. The company's workforce development investments are designed to improve access to employment through job training, education, mentoring and skills development.

Among the current grant recipients are:

  • Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council — $100,000 to manage The BNY Mellon Audience Development Fund, which provides grants to eligible local not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations with budgets under $2 million, scholarships to the National Arts Marketing Project Conference (the Americans for the Arts' pre-eminent arts marketing professional development experience) and professional development/consulting services through the Business Volunteers for the Arts program.
  • Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh — $75,000 for the organization's annual Rebuilding Day event and ongoing emergency service program. Specifically, the grant will help provide emergency repairs for elderly homeowners during the year, support preliminary projects and needed priorities before Rebuilding Day and assist in numerous projects on Rebuilding Day.
  • Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank — $50,000 to assist in the purchase and distribution of food and grocery products as part of the organization's capacity building project. This effort is committed to increasing the number of people served and the amount of food distributed.
  • The Children's Home of Pittsburgh — $30,000 to assist low-income families that use the organization's Child's Way daycare and head start supplemental assistance program for medically fragile children. Child's Way is a vital alternative or supplement to home care for medically fragile children up to age 9. By providing medically skilled, daytime child care and therapeutic services, the program allows families to maintain their employment and health insurance while their children receive comprehensive care.
