Timothy M. Sweeney
Tim was elected to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Board in 2012, and elected vice chair in 2020. As a director, he helps set the company’s strategy and overall direction. Within a highly competitive and highly regulated business environment, the board oversees and governs BCBSMA's operations, which includes the provision of health coverage to individuals and public and private employers. Tim is the chair of the board’s finance and business performance committee, vice chair of the human resources committee and serves on the investment committee.
Tim joined Liberty Mutual in 1993 as director of corporate strategy. Over his 22-year career with the company, Tim has managed distribution and product management in the small commercial independent agency segment, overseen numerous successful insurance company acquisition and integration efforts, and led the distribution, marketing, digital and customer service organizations for Liberty’s U.S. personal lines business unit.
In January 2009, Tim was named president, U.S. personal insurance, and in February 2016, he was appointed to his current position as president, Liberty Mutual Global Retail Markets. With more than $20 billion in annual personal lines, accident and health, and small commercial insurance revenue, Global Consumer Markets accounts for nearly 60% of Liberty Mutual’s worldwide revenue.
Tim serves on the board of directors of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Washington D.C., and the Mass General Hospital annual gala to benefit children and young adults on the autism spectrum. Tim also serves on the executive committee of the board of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable.
Tim holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is a native of Lowell Massachusetts and currently resides in the Boston area.
